A 17-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl were caught on camera throwing punches at each other. Both of the student’s mothers are in agreement that school officials should have intervened sooner, but they both are telling different stories about who started it. The fight happened on October 8th. 14-year-old Chanell Matinez says she was bullied by the student for years. She claims the bullying started after she had a falling out with his sister. The 17-year-old boy’s mother Autumn Smith-Rupert says her son was defending himself. She says he’d been receiving death threats form the 14-year-old girl’s brother since April. She says the threats were reported to both law enforcement and Northside ISD. “Walking up on a person when there is a stay-away contract in place, when you know your brother put out threats to kill him,” Smith-Rupert said. “My son didn’t know what she was walking up on him doing. So, he did what he had to do.” Smith-Rupert says the day of the fight, 14-year-old Chanell Martinez approached her son. “She walked up to him,” Smith-Rupert said. He threw the first punch, because I asked that question to the police who took the report. He said she was in enough space that when you get that close to a person, they have to right to defend themselves. Now, why the school stood back and watched that fight go on the way it went on, I don’t agree at all.” Martinez says the fight went on two rounds, each lasting 3 to 5 minutes before school staff members stepped in. “I was just kind of hoping they would pull us away because it was going on for a good while,” Martinez said. “After the second round, I was just like, dang where are they at?” Since the fight Martinez says she’s had severe headaches, panic attacks, and hasn’t been able to keep her food down. Her mother also questions why it took staff so long to break up the fight. “Somebody should’ve stepped in,” Sylvia Garza said. “Somebody should’ve stopped it immediately. If you’re not going to be stepping in to protect these children, then you shouldn’t be working there at that school.” Northside ISD says staff members should safely break up fights and then contact administration and the police. The district confirms there were multiple stay-away agreements between the students involved in the fight, and that disciplinary consequences were issued for the parties involved. Rupert says she understands that some may not agree with a boy fighting a girl, but she’s adamant that it was self-defense. “How would it have been if she would’ve beat him up,” Rupert asked? “Quit approaching these men trying to act tough. If the have an issue with a man, you know most of the time you can’t beat a man. Go get somebody. Why are you engaging in something you know you’re not going to win. That’s what I teach my children.” Trending Dozens of undelivered ballots found in dumpster at Seattle park The ballots have already been reissued to the affected voters.
